Solar in Norfolk
Homes in Hemsby are getting solar panels and heat pumps.
In March 2025 Salix Finance, which delivers the Home Upgrade Grant Phase 2 for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, visited Great Yarmouth, where the borough council is using that grant and the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund together. Through the Home Upgrade Grant the council is working to upgrade 355 homes across the district, 55 more than its initial target. In Hemsby, a retired couple who have lived in their home for 47 years have swapped oil heating for an air source heat pump, with solar panels and top-up loft insulation, and another Hemsby household moved from two electric heaters to a heat pump and solar. Salix’s assistant director for housing, Kevin Smallwood, said the works “help to bring energy bills down and keep their homes warm”.
Many rural Norfolk homes are off the gas grid, so the Hemsby route — oil out, heat pump in, panels on the roof — is one plenty of private owners are weighing up too. Much of a heat pump’s work is done in the evening, so battery storage helps you use more of the daytime solar; and if your existing panels have stopped earning, start with solar panel repair.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Norfolk.
We know Norfolk roofs
Norfolk roofs are their own trade. North Norfolk is flint cottages under red clay and black glazed pantiles, which need hooks made for that tile rather than the standard kit; west Norfolk adds carrstone around Hunstanton and Snettisham; and reed thatch in the Broads villages means the array often has to go on an outbuilding or the ground. In Great Yarmouth and King’s Lynn it is Victorian terraces, and along the coast from Caister to Sea Palling, bungalows and chalets with low, wide roofs. The county is flat and open, so panels get good sun, but North Sea wind and salt work on frames, fixings and isolators, and plenty of feed-in tariff era systems here have not been serviced since they went in.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover King’s Lynn, Great Yarmouth and north Norfolk?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Norfolk — Norwich and its suburbs, King’s Lynn, Hunstanton and Downham Market in the west, Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and the Broads in the east, Cromer, Sheringham, Holt and Fakenham in the north, and Thetford, Watton and Diss in the south. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Norfolk that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can you fit solar panels on a pantiled or flint cottage in Norfolk?
Usually, yes. Clay pantiles take panels with roof hooks made for that tile rather than the standard plain-tile kit. A listed cottage needs listed building consent, and in a conservation area panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission, so we check before the survey and tell you where you stand. Where the house roof won’t work, an outbuilding or a ground-mounted array often will. See solar panel installations.
