Solar in Peterborough
Peterborough’s village halls are going solar.
In March 2026 Peterborough City Council reported that solar panels had been installed at Wansford Community Hall, paid for by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority through its Net Zero Villages initiative. The council had earlier awarded funding to Wansford Parish Council, Marholm Village Hall Trust and Northborough Parish Council to put panels on buildings they own. The chairman of Wansford Parish Council said the system had run the hall’s heating for a two-hour booking and was recharging “even on a cloudy day”, with surplus energy potentially sold back to the grid; the hall is used by the Women’s Institute, an arts and crafts group and children’s parties.
Selling surplus power to the grid is the same sum a Peterborough household does, and the maths changes once you can store that surplus for the evening. Battery storage can be added to most existing systems; before you do, a service makes sure the panels and inverter you are building on are actually performing as they should.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Peterborough.
We know Peterborough roofs
Peterborough grew fast as a new town in the 1970s and 80s, so a large share of its solar sits on the estates of Bretton, Werrington, the Ortons and Hampton, with simple modern roofs on sound timber. The rest is on the Victorian terraces of Fletton, Millfield and Woodston and the 1930s semis of Walton and Dogsthorpe. The Fens are flat, dry and open, so shading is rare and a good roof here generates strongly, but the same openness means wind loads fixings on exposed sites and dust from the fields settles on the glass. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.
