Solar in Derby
Derby’s hospital trust is turning its roofs over to solar.
In May 2026 University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust said it had installed solar panels at Florence Nightingale Community Hospital in Derby, Queen’s Hospital Burton, and community hospitals in Tamworth and Lichfield. More than 5,200 square metres of panels are expected to produce over one million kWh a year, enough for around 250–300 homes, and save more than 259 tonnes of carbon annually. The Burton and Florence Nightingale schemes were backed by £1.8m of government funding, and the rollout builds on solar in Royal Derby Hospital’s new multi-storey car park. The Trust’s Director of Estates and Facilities, Andrew Selby, said: “By making the most of our roof space, we are generating clean energy where we use it, cutting carbon and being more efficient with our resources.”
Using the roof space you already have makes just as much sense on a semi in Mickleover or a terrace in Normanton. If your panels went up in the feed-in tariff years, a service shows whether they are still earning their keep, and adding battery storage lets you use more of that daytime generation in the evening.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Derby.
We know Derbyshire roofs
Derby and Derbyshire give an installer very different roofs within a short drive. In the city there are red-brick Victorian terraces around Normanton, Pear Tree and the Arboretum, inter-war and post-war semis in Allestree, Littleover and Chaddesden, and newer estates at Oakwood. North of the city, stone mill workers’ houses in Belper and the Derwent Valley, and stone cottages around Matlock and Wirksworth, often sit in conservation areas that need checking first. The old colliery towns — Ripley, Heanor, Ilkeston, Staveley — are rows of terraces with small roofs, and up in the Peak the wind, rain and snow test fixings and isolators and grow moss on panels. Many systems here went in during the feed-in tariff years and are now ageing.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Chesterfield, Belper, Ilkeston and Matlock?
Yes. Our engineers cover Derby and the whole of Derbyshire — Belper, Ripley, Heanor and Ilkeston to the north and east of the city, Swadlincote and Melbourne to the south, Matlock, Wirksworth and Ashbourne in the Dales, Chesterfield, Staveley and Dronfield in the north-east, and Buxton and Glossop in the High Peak. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Derby that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels in Belper or elsewhere in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site?
Often, yes, but it depends on the house and exactly where it sits. In the Belper and Milford conservation area, Amber Valley Borough Council applies an Article 4 direction to every dwelling, which removes most permitted development rights, and a listed mill house needs listed building consent. Panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission in other conservation areas too. We check all of this before the survey and tell you where you stand. See solar panel installations.
