Solar in Stoke-on-Trent
Keele, next to Stoke, ranks fourth in the UK for university renewables.
In August 2025 Keele University, just outside Newcastle-under-Lyme, said new Higher Education Statistics Agency data put it fourth in the UK higher education sector for renewable energy generation in 2023/24, behind only Cambridge, Bristol and Loughborough. Keele generated 6,253 MWh of renewable energy that year and exported 627 MWh back to the national grid. Its on-site Low Carbon Energy Generation Park has 12,500 solar panels, two wind turbines and an industrial battery, together providing around half of the campus’s electricity, and the University also cut its carbon emissions by 3.5 per cent on the previous year. Professor Mark Ormerod OBE, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, said: “Sustainability is a key overarching priority for Keele University.”
A 12,500-panel array has a team looking after it; a twelve-panel system on a terrace in Hanley or a semi in Trentham usually doesn’t, and faults can go unnoticed for months. A yearly service checks what your panels are really generating, and if the system has stopped altogether, inverter repair is usually the fix, whoever fitted it.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Stoke-on-Trent.
We know Potteries roofs
Stoke-on-Trent is a city of terraces. The potbank streets of Burslem, Tunstall, Longton and Fenton were built in red brick for pottery workers, with narrow slate and clay-tiled roofs broken up by chimney stacks and rear offshoots, so arrays are small and shading matters. Council estates such as Bentilee and Abbey Hulton, and the semis of Trentham, Weston Coyney and Newcastle-under-Lyme, have larger, simpler roofs that take a full array. Up in the Staffordshire Moorlands around Leek and Biddulph, stone farmhouses sit high and exposed, and wind, rain and snow test every fixing. Plenty of the area’s systems went up in the feed-in tariff years and are now at the age where inverters start to fail.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford and Leek?
Yes. Our engineers cover all six towns of Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding parts of Staffordshire — Newcastle-under-Lyme, Kidsgrove and Audley to the north-west, Biddulph, Leek and Cheadle in the Moorlands, and Stone, Stafford and Uttoxeter to the south and east. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Stoke-on-Trent that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can you fit solar panels on a terraced house in Stoke-on-Trent?
Usually, yes. Terraced roofs in the six towns are often narrow and broken up by chimney stacks and rear offshoots, so the survey looks closely at which slope gets the sun and what shades it; where a chimney shades part of the array, panel optimisers can stop it dragging the rest down. We check the roof covering and its condition before recommending anything, and a house in a conservation area can need planning permission, which we check before the survey. See solar panel installations.
