Solar in Cheshire
Cheshire East Council now has 22 solar arrays on its own roofs.
In March 2026, at the last ever meeting of its environment and communities committee, Cheshire East Council reported that it had achieved 60% of its target to be carbon neutral by 2030. Environment officer Emma Williams told the meeting the council had received more than £10 million of Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme funding, and now has 22 roof-mounted solar arrays, 18 sites fully switched to LED lighting and 16 air source heat pumps. Its solar farm at Leighton Grange, on the outskirts of Crewe, has been running for a year, powering the composting plant and exporting the surplus to the grid. “We are now 60% of the way towards our carbon neutrality target,” she said. The committee unanimously adopted a refreshed carbon action plan for 2026 to 2030.
Twenty-two council roofs is a start; plenty of Cheshire households, from Crewe terraces to Wilmslow detached houses, put panels up in the feed-in tariff years, and those systems are now at the age where inverters start to fail. A service shows what yours is really producing, and if generation has dropped or stopped altogether, inverter repair is usually the fix.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Cheshire.
We know Cheshire roofs
Cheshire packs a lot of different roofs into one county. Crewe grew as a railway town, so there are long streets of Victorian terraces with chimneys to plan around, and Macclesfield and Congleton have silk-mill terraces and weavers’ cottages on steep streets. In Northwich, subsidence from brine pumping is why many town-centre buildings were timber-framed so they could be jacked up. Nantwich and Chester have listed black-and-white buildings; Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Prestbury have large detached houses with complicated roofs; and across the Cheshire Plain, dairy farms have barns and outbuildings that often take panels better than the house. On the Pennine edge above Macclesfield and Bollington, wind and rain test every fixing.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Crewe, Macclesfield, Northwich and Knutsford?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Cheshire — Chester, Ellesmere Port, Neston and Frodsham in the west, Warrington, Widnes and Runcorn in the north, Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich in the middle of the county, Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach and Congleton in the south, and Knutsford, Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Poynton in the east. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Cheshire that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a listed or black-and-white house in Cheshire?
Often, yes, but it depends on the building. A listed building needs listed building consent, and in a conservation area — Cheshire West and Chester alone has 96, including Chester’s city centre — panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission. We check before the survey and tell you where you stand. Where the house roof won’t work, a barn, an outbuilding or a ground-mounted array often will. See solar panel installations.
