Solar in Chester
Chester’s new hospital building runs on solar, not gas.
In September 2025 the Countess of Chester Hospital opened its new Women and Children’s Building, the first completed NHS facility in England to be verified as compliant with the NHS Net Zero Building Standard, which NHS England introduced in 2023. The building is fully electric and uses no gas, with solar panels that generate clean electricity on site, highly insulated walls, windows and roof, smart lighting and ventilation, and a digital control system that tracks energy use and carbon emissions in real time. It opened on 8 September 2025 with 66 beds, was delivered with £110 million allocated through the Government’s RAAC programme, and meets BREEAM Excellent standards. Chief executive Jane Tomkinson OBE said: “We are proud to be leading the way, right here in Chester.”
A hospital can design solar in from day one; most Chester homes are adding it to a roof built long before anyone thought of panels, from Hoole’s Victorian terraces to post-war houses in Blacon and Upton. We survey and fit new solar panel installations across the city, and if your panels are already up but the output has dropped, start with solar panel repair.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Chester.
We know Chester roofs
Chester packs a lot of roof types into a few miles. Inside the walls and around the Rows, the city-centre conservation area and listed black-and-white buildings mean an installer has to check what is allowed before a single bracket goes on. Just outside, Hoole, Boughton and Handbridge are streets of Victorian and Edwardian red-brick terraces under slate, with chimneys and rear offshoots to plan shading around. Blacon, Upton and Vicars Cross are post-war and later estates with simpler roofs that suit a full array, and Ellesmere Port adds its own terraces and estates. Neston and Parkgate face the Dee estuary, where salt wind works on frames, fixings and isolators.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Ellesmere Port, Frodsham and Neston?
Yes. Our engineers cover Chester and the whole of west Cheshire, from Ellesmere Port, Whitby and the Suttons to Neston and Parkgate on the Dee, Frodsham and Helsby to the east, and Tarvin, Tattenhall and the villages to the south. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Chester that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a house in one of Chester’s conservation areas?
Often, yes, but it depends on the roof and whether the building is listed. The city centre, Handbridge, Curzon Park, Queens Park, Hoole Road and Boughton all have conservation areas, where panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission, and a listed building needs listed building consent. We check this before the survey and tell you where you stand, and every install is by our own MCS certified engineers. See solar panel installations.
