Solar on the Wirral

550 Wirral social homes are getting solar panels.

In September 2026 Magenta Living appointed RPS Group to deliver a retrofit programme worth up to £4.7 million across 600 of its least energy-efficient homes on the Wirral. The work includes 550 solar PV systems, more than 400 loft insulation upgrades and 25 air source heat pumps, alongside external and cavity wall insulation and ventilation improvements. The programme combines £1 million from the Government’s Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund Wave 3 with £1.4 million of matched funding from Magenta Living, which is investing a further £2.3 million in self-funded measures. Leah Gilbert, the housing association’s head of sustainability and decarbonisation, said the programme would improve hundreds of its homes, with measures such as “solar panels helping residents generate their own electricity and reduce the cost of running their homes.”

Those 550 new arrays will sit alongside the privately owned systems already on roofs from Wallasey to Heswall, plenty of them fitted in the feed-in tariff years and not looked at since. If yours has gone quiet, inverter repair is usually where to start, and a yearly service shows whether the panels are still producing what they should.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R on the Wirral.

We know Wirral roofs

The Wirral is a peninsula of very different roofs. Birkenhead, Tranmere and Rock Ferry are streets of Victorian terraces with long shared rooflines and chimneys to work around, while Oxton Village and Port Sunlight are conservation areas, and many of Port Sunlight’s cottages are listed. Wallasey, Moreton, Upton and Bebington are mostly inter-war and post-war semis that suit a tidy array, and Heswall and Caldy add larger detached houses and bungalows with wide roofs. With water on three sides, wind and salt off the Irish Sea, the Mersey and the Dee work on frames, fixings and isolators in New Brighton, Hoylake and West Kirby.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Birkenhead, Wallasey, Heswall and West Kirby?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole Wirral peninsula — Birkenhead, Oxton, Prenton and Rock Ferry, Wallasey, Liscard and New Brighton, Moreton, Hoylake and West Kirby on the north and west coast, and Upton, Heswall, Bebington, Bromborough and Eastham. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system on the Wirral that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Do salt and wind on the Wirral coast affect solar panels?

They can. Near the shore at New Brighton, Hoylake, Meols and West Kirby, salt spray leaves a film on the glass and works on frames, fixings, isolators and connectors over time, and strong westerly winds test the mounting. A yearly check catches corrosion and loose fixings before they turn into a fault, and a clean clears the salt film. See solar panel servicing and solar panel cleaning.
