Solar in Northampton

A 78-acre solar farm is coming to the edge of Northampton.

On 14 July 2026 West Northamptonshire Council’s strategic planning committee approved plans by Grange Farm Partnership for a 78-acre solar farm near Preston Deanery, just south of the Brackmills industrial estate. It is expected to hold 48,802 panels generating around 26.597 megawatts, and a condition means its use as a solar site will automatically expire after 40 years. Cllr Richard Pipes asked why the panels were going on greenfield land rather than on the rooftops of warehouses and car parks such as those at Brackmills; the developer’s agent, Eleni Marshall, said: “40 years is a long time, but it’s not permanent in the context of something which is bricks, mortar, tarmac etcetera which will never come up.” Councillors approved it by seven votes to one, with five abstaining.

One councillor’s question about using roofs instead of fields applies at home too: the roof you already have is the obvious place for solar. If you are weighing it up, start with solar panel installations; if your panels have been up since the feed-in tariff years and generation has slipped, solar panel repair covers any installer’s system.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Northampton.

We know Northamptonshire roofs

Northampton’s streets still show the boot and shoe trade. Red-brick Victorian terraces run through Kingsley, Semilong, St James and Far Cotton, with narrow roofs broken up by chimneys and rear offshoots, so shading has to be planned around. The new town expansion from the late 1960s brought whole estates such as Lings, Ecton Brook, Rectory Farm and Hunsbury, and Grange Park followed later, all with larger, simpler roofs that suit a full array. In the county there are ironstone and limestone village cottages, where a listed building or conservation area has to be checked first, and more shoe-town terraces in Kettering, Wellingborough and Rushden. Many systems here went up in the feed-in tariff years and are now due a check.
