Solar in Exeter
The University of Exeter is adding thousands more solar panels.
In June 2025 the University of Exeter said thousands of solar panels were being installed, including 1,800 on land near Duryard Halls of Residence. Once completed, they should take total solar generation on its Exeter campuses to 4.1 gigawatt-hours a year, equivalent to the power used by 1,500 households and about 15% of the University’s annual requirements, saving 840 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year. Panels are already on the roofs of 19 University buildings, including new arrays on the Physics building, Richards building and Holland Hall, with more planned on buildings, car park canopies and unused land. Head of Carbon and Energy Andy Seaman said: “We are investing in sustainable initiatives to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and provide energy security for our campuses.”
As its generation grows, the University says it will look at managing demand, potentially with battery storage. The same thinking works on a semi in Pennsylvania or a terrace in Heavitree: panels make most around midday, and most homes use their power in the evening. Battery storage moves that surplus into the evening, and if an older array has gone quiet, inverter repair is usually the fix.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Exeter.
We know Exeter roofs
Exeter’s roofs follow the way the city grew. Around Southernhay and St Leonard’s there are Georgian terraces and Regency villas, many inside conservation areas, so we check before anything goes up. Heavitree, Newtown, Polsloe and St Thomas are mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces under slate, with chimney stacks and rear offshoots that decide how many panels fit. Whipton, Beacon Heath and Exwick have post-war estates with simpler roofs that usually take a full array, and Pinhoe, Alphington and Cranbrook have newer homes. Exeter is a city of hills, so roofs in Pennsylvania and Stoke Hill face every direction, and down the estuary in Topsham, damp salt air off the Exe works on frames, clamps and connectors.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Exmouth, Crediton, Cullompton and Cranbrook?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole city — Heavitree, Pinhoe, Whipton, Pennsylvania, Exwick, St Thomas, Alphington, St Leonard’s and Topsham — and out to Cranbrook, Exminster, Exmouth, Dawlish, Crediton and Cullompton, plus the rest of Devon. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Exeter that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a house in one of Exeter’s conservation areas?
Often, yes, but it depends on the roof and whether the building is listed. Older parts of the city, such as Southernhay, St Leonard’s and Topsham, include conservation areas, where panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission, and a listed building needs listed building consent. We check this before the survey and tell you where you stand, and every solar panel install is by our own MCS certified engineers. See solar panel installations.
