Solar in Plymouth
Plymouth’s community energy charity wants to double the city’s rooftop solar.
In February 2026, as the Government published its Local Power Plan, with £1 billion of funding for community energy, Plymouth Energy Community set out what its solar already does for the city. PEC has 33 rooftop solar sites on schools and community buildings and operates nearly 2MW of rooftop solar. Money from selling power at its Ernesettle Community Solar Farm helps fund its energy advice service for households struggling with their bills. PEC is now looking for businesses and community groups to help it add another 2MW of ready-to-build solar projects. Renewables Manager Paul Elliot said: “Our ambition is to double the amount of rooftop solar in the city and build Chelson Meadow solar farm on the old landfill site”, which would be 15MW, enough to power around 4,300 homes.
Doubling the city’s rooftop solar means far more than schools and church halls: much of it will be on houses in Plymstock, Plympton and Peverell. If your panels went up years ago, a service shows whether they are still producing what they should, and battery storage lets you keep the daytime surplus for the evening.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Plymouth.
We know Plymouth roofs
Plymouth’s roofs tell the story of the city. The centre was flattened in the Blitz and rebuilt after the war, so it is mostly flat-roofed blocks. Around it, Mutley, Lipson, Stoke and Peverell are long Victorian and Edwardian terraces under slate, with bays, chimneys and rear extensions that decide how many panels fit, while Devonport and Stonehouse mix Georgian streets, naval buildings and conservation areas. Post-war estates such as Efford, Whitleigh, Southway and Estover have simpler roofs that usually take a full array, and Plympton and Plymstock are mostly semis and newer houses. Across the city, wet Atlantic weather, salt off Plymouth Sound and the gulls are hard on frames, clamps and connectors.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Plympton, Plymstock, Ivybridge and Saltash?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Plymouth — the city centre, Stonehouse, Devonport and Stoke, Mutley, Mannamead and Peverell, St Budeaux, Crownhill, Derriford and Estover, Plympton and Plymstock — and out to Ivybridge, Tavistock and Saltash. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Plymouth that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Does salt air off Plymouth Sound affect solar panels?
It can, over time. Salt settles on the glass and dulls it, and it works on frames, clamps, connectors and anything metal on the roof, so systems near the water, from the Hoe and the Barbican to Plymstock and Hooe, are worth checking more often. A yearly service looks at all of that from the ground and on the roof, and solar panel cleaning clears the build-up. Leave the roof and the wiring to us. See solar panel servicing.
