Solar in Cornwall
Cornwall’s hospitals have put 900 solar panels on their roofs.
In February 2025 Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust announced £1.4 million from the NHS National Energy Efficiency Fund, with £300,000 of it going on more than 900 photovoltaic roof panels across three sites: Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance and St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle. The rest paid for over 8,300 LED lights and automated emergency lighting at Truro, St Michael’s and Marie Therese House, with the LED work alone expected to improve energy efficiency by up to 60 per cent. The trust’s sustainability champion called the funding “fantastic news” for its green goals, and the work was due to finish in July 2025.
The far west gets some of the best light in Britain, but salt air, wind and a decade of weather take their toll on a domestic array near Truro, Penzance or Hayle. A service will find out why yours is under-performing, and coastal grime makes cleaning worth doing more often than it would be inland.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Cornwall.
We know Cornwall roofs
Cornwall has more solar per head than almost anywhere in Britain, thanks to long summer days, a mild climate and a decade of feed-in tariff installs, and that means a lot of ageing systems on their original inverters. The county is also the hardest on solar hardware we work in: sea on three sides means salt on the glass and in the connectors almost everywhere, Atlantic wind loads fixings on exposed roofs, and gulls are a fact of life. The housing is granite and slate cottages in the villages and old towns, a lot of them listed or in conservation areas, alongside the 1930s and post-war stock of Truro, Camborne and Redruth and the newer estates around Newquay and St Austell. Scaffold and access on a granite cottage take more planning than on a modern estate, and that is reflected in the quote.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Penzance, Newquay, St Austell and Bude?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Cornwall, from Penzance and the Lizard to Bude and Launceston, and across the Tamar into Plymouth. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
My installer in Cornwall has stopped trading. Can you still look after my system?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and solar panel servicing.
Does sea air damage solar panels?
Not the panels themselves — the glass and frames are built for it — but salt gets into isolators, connectors and inverter vents and is the commonest cause of the faults we find on coastal systems. An annual service that checks and cleans those points, and a rinse of the glass, keeps a coastal system generating properly. See solar panel servicing and solar panel cleaning.
